Natalie, it's the view in through a steamed-up cafe window(with versions of the photo in decreasing sizes superimposed, using Picasa collage tool, to give the sensation of inwardness and telescoping). It's always hard to know if a picture is 'readable' to others, when of course you can't unknow what it's of.
I found what you said about the "mother tongue" very interesting but also very sad. I'm having a slightly emotional (though completely different) time at the moment passing all the Mother's Day stuff in the shops - my first Mother's Day since my mother died. A bit poignant.
