The right light

The austere beauty of Dulwich Picture Gallery is hard to capture in photographs. This past weekend the light was right - the miracle of Soane's design picked out in gold and shadow.

Enjoyed the photographs but I have to say I find the apparently blanked-off windows disturbing - even though it makes sense in a gallery.

I was going to say the same thing about "the apparently blanked-off windows" - makes the building look very somber, rather like a prison. Hopefully the art inside was more joyful.

I can see where you need the right light to bring oui the shapes, well done!

Thanks for the reminder of a great visit there just a few weeks ago. Until recently, it was a treasure house unknown to me. Reading Lydia Davis, on your recommendation, and loving it.

I particularly like the last one because I'm not distracted by colours--but all bright and lit.

These are fab photos. I've never been to the gallery but I studied Soane for one of my OU courses and I've always wanted to go. None of the pictures in the course were as good as these.

Earlybird, I'm so glad you like these - it seems to me the most perfect and characteristic of Soane's projects.
