Technophobia

Anything new on the damn computer, my brain blocks. I'm from another time, began this too late, in my thirties. I hate this repeated blank incomprehension, want to run, screaming and flailing, from my dithering, humiliating incompetence. I know it will usually slide into place, given time and patience. But the fear is almost overwhelming. If I can't keep abreast of this, I can't make a living. And then what will become of me?

It is part of the general conspiracy of inanimate objects against us...your computer is obviously in a cell with my woodstove

You could form a small co-operative with me! With my geekery and your brain there's not much we couldn't do!

Oh, I feel your pain, Jean!

Oh, God, me too. Twitter still has me paralyzed with fright. And I used to be a programmer, which makes it all the more humiliating.

I just can't manipulate the tiny buttons, too much like playing an instrument. I have enough trouble with mistyping on a full size keyboard.

Use those around you, they get to feel smart, you get help. The pace of change is continuing to accelerate.

With technology, as with anything else new, it is best to take baby steps - stay within your comfort zone most of the time (blogging/emails whatever that is) and try to push yourself once a day to venture out of it and just try one new thing. Spend a short time on it, ask for assistance (from bloggers maybe?) if you get stuck, go back to it and keep trying it. If you really can't do it - just say to yourself "oh well, I'll try another thing, that one is not for me". Well, that's what I do.

Oh - and like with setting the timer on the cooker - when you initially learn something new you have to keep doing it and doing it for a few weeks so it gets stuck in your head.
